The Operator was created during 1 intensive week. It was made by a 6 student team, for the year 2017-2018.
The player controls the operator of a small squad of soldiers during the First World War. He must manage the difficulties and morale of his squad, through mail management, in order to survive the conflict. By deciding to send mails as they are, censure them or throw them out, the player impacts his resources (morale, fodd, military force) and the narrative.
With this game, we had to be very precise about the intentions we wanted design-wise. Even though management and storytelling often go well together, we had to ensure that we all had the same vision about the rôle of each part in the game. In this case, we chose to give the narrative the major role. And as I never worked on a narrative game before, I had to put a lot of efforts on the writing, and create different narrative arcs for different solider, while remaining consistent with the World War 2 era.
